In the past, designers are very particular about the realistic 3D look in their designs, which is known as skeuomorphic design. The great looking websites making heavy use of 3D effects, textured surfaces, light effects and gradients. Characteristics of the this trend was 3D bevelled buttons, Shadows on design edges etc.

Now, the new trends in interface design, is the return of simple, flat and typographical oriented design. Which is known as Flat Design.

Flat design is a minimalistic design approach that emphasizes usability. It features clean, open space, crisp edges, bright colours and two-dimensional/flat illustrations. Also simple shapes, bold contrasting colours, considered use of type and grids, and smooth, intuitive navigation

One of the most popular examples of this is Microsofts Metro interface that take this to extreme. The Flat design took over the design world. Microsoft (since 2010), Google and Apple adapted flat design to some extent and thousands of designers followed.

The trend right now is use of flat and high contrast colour (less gradients), square corners, strait lines. Some designers thought it as beginning of the revolution.

“I believe that the flat design trend is a symptom of the growing maturity in the field of web and interface design. This maturity applies to our designers – who are getting better at making interfaces that encourage interactivity and engagement – as well as to our users.”Marci Ikeler, Designer & Founder of Little Arrows

“In essence, the flat era of design has narrowed the constraints but surprisingly expanded our approach towards design. Skeuomorphic design was not a trend, it was necessary for technology to be adopted. Now that it is, flat design is another necessary step that will faciliate exploration of new design techniques that will take the industry to new heights”Damian Madray

We have collected some great examples of flat design, to help you get an idea of how this recent trend is used by the designers.
